THE STORY

Cailleach of Loughcrew

The cailleach is a veiled old woman who brings winter to the landscape. The irish word for owl is “cailleach oiche” which means “Old woman of the Night”.  She leapt from cairn to cairn implying superhuman powers dropping quartz stones from her apron. She is very ancient.

My Cailleach is made using an inverted entrance stone from Loughcrew passage mound making the “stones” tumble from her body.
